Countercultural Leadership: Capitalism, Race & what it means in Business with Toi Smith

Lately I’ve been noticing the concept of ‘feminizing’ the way we work as a pretty trending theme around town.

Seems every business coach & influencer is layering ‘soul into their strategy’ and balancing their ‘masculine in their marketing’.

I say this a little tongue in cheek 😝 because:
1. I’m also one of these people!!
2. I believe this stuff is actually very important
3. There are a lot of people with deep resonance that actually have a lot to teach on this

But there is another cohort of people using this language in shallow & superficial ways.

So how do we disern who’s just giving lip service to the concept of a feminized economy? And who’s the real deal?

How do we make sure we’re doing as much as we can in our own way of working? And where can we find new edges of doing/being more?

One woman who’s work constantly takes a deep, sometimes uncomfortable & genuinely impactful perspective on doing business differently is Toi Smith. Hands down, I love this woman’s countercultural work as a growth and impact strategist for entrepreneurs.

Toi weaves together, race and oppression, capatalism, pleasure and motherhood into her analysis of how we can do business direrently.

I interviewed Toi last year for our conference. Her voice & the themes we discussed continue to be relevant (perhaps even more so) in 2022, so join us for this conversation exploring capitalism, race and what it means in business.

If you’re a woman and business owner, entrepreneur or someone interested in these themes, today’s podcast is for you.

In a system that shapes our bodies as a means for production (that is, taxi for our brains & a machine to put to work to get things done) it’s a countercultural act to center the fullest expression of who you are as a human being in the way you live & work. That’s exactly what Toi takes a stand for & in this conversation we explore current cultures including capitalism, race & what it means for women, white women and business.

In this discussion with Jenna & Toi we explore:

  • 3 common capitalist practices many entrepreneurs employ
  • How Toi’s experience of embodiment lead her to do anti-capitalism inquiry & work
  • A brief history of capitalism & race in the US
  • The practices Toi uses to create pleasure & stamina in how she works
  • What white women who (truly) want to be ally’s need to be doing
